How to open a Roger BH30 by hand
Open a Roger BH30 sliding gate by hand safely. Guidance from our family-run team in Chafford Hundred.
Safety checks for the BH30
Gate type: sliding. Steps below follow the manufacturer manual as drafted by our Tech Support team.
Safety first
- Isolate the power at the gate isolator or fused spur before you touch the release, and again before you lock it. If a backup battery is fitted the gate can still move with the mains off — do not release it; call us.
- Find the release key (and any extra locks such as drop bolts or magnetic locks) before you start. Do not force a lock or use pliers.
- Do not attempt this if the gate is damaged, leaning, off its hinges or track, has no travel stops, or sits on a steep slope you cannot control.
- Keep children, pets and others clear of the gate path, hinges and the gap at the end. Move the gate slowly by hand.
- Never open a motor cover, control box or wiring. This guide is for gates only — barriers are engineer-only.
- If you are unsure at any point, stop and call our family-run team on 01375 886299.
You will need
- The release key supplied with your gate motor (BH30 manual p.13 / p.19: "the key included").

Opening the gate by hand
- Switch the gate's power off at the isolator or fused spur, and wait until the motor is completely still. (BH30 p.13 / p.19 warning)
- Flip open the small lock cover on the motor (step 1 in the diagram). (BH30 p.13 / p.19)
- Put the key in the lock and turn it 90° clockwise (a quarter turn to the right, step 2). (BH30 p.13 / p.19)
- Open the release cover all the way (step 3). (BH30 p.13 / p.19)
- Slide the gate by hand. Move it steadily and don't let it run on. (BH30 p.13 / p.19: "Move the leaf manually")
While the release is open, the gate won't respond to remotes, apps or buttons. It stops and ignores all commands until the release is closed again. (B70/1DC manual p.64)
Putting the gate back to normal (automatic) operation
- Make sure the power is still off. (BH30 p.13 / p.19 warning)
- Lower the release cover with the key still in the lock. Keep your fingers clear. (BH30 p.13 / p.19)
- Turn the key 90° anticlockwise (a quarter turn to the left). (BH30 p.13 / p.19)
- Take the key out and close the small lock cover. (BH30 p.13 / p.19)
- Switch the power back on. (BH30 p.13 / p.19: "Reconnect to mains electricity")
The first movement afterwards is slow, and that's normal
If the gate was left part-way open (not fully open or fully closed), the next time you open it:
- it moves slowly while it relearns where it is,
- the flashing light flashes in a different pattern from normal,
- don't press any more buttons until the gate reaches fully open or fully closed. It then goes back to normal.
(B70/1DC manual p.89, "Position recovery mode")
If you have the BH30/804/R (reversible) model
The BH30/804/R is a reversible motor (BH30 manual p.4). With this model the gate can be pushed by hand without unlocking it (B70/1DC manual p.89). Your exact model is printed in the "MODEL ID" box on the motor's label (BH30 manual p.17). If you're not sure which model you have, follow the steps above.
Still not working?
If the gate still won't work after the power is back on and the release is locked, please contact Charged Services and we'll arrange a visit. Please don't open the motor cover. The control unit sits underneath it (B70/1DC manual p.61), and that part is a job for our engineers.
Call Charged Services on 01375 886299 and quote the make and model on the motor label.
