Safety Inspection & Compliance

Automatic doors and BS EN 16005

BS EN 16005 is the standard for the safety in use of power-operated pedestrian doors. It sets out how a door should behave, which sensors it needs, and how the risks of impact, crushing and trapping are managed and reduced. The current UK version is BS EN 16005:2023, which replaced the 2012 edition.

It covers sliding, swing, revolving and folding doors, and balanced doors. It applies to doors used for everyday access and to doors on escape routes, including fire-resisting and smoke-control doorsets.

We inspect, service and risk-assess automatic pedestrian doors to BS EN 16005. Charged Services is a member of the ADIA (Automatic Door Installation Association). Our director is ADIA-trained in automatic pedestrian door safety to BS EN 16005 (City & Guilds accredited).

Your Responsibilities

Who is responsible?

If you own or manage a building with automatic doors, keeping them safe is your responsibility. HSE names regulations 5 and 18 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, covering the maintenance of workplace equipment and the safety of doors and gates, as relevant duties for powered doors. Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 adds a duty to visitors and the public, and HSE says that includes landlords and managing agents.

BS EN 16005 recommends checking a door's safety functions and devices at least once a year. The ADIA's advice to duty holders is to book regular servicing, ask for a safety inspection and risk assessment, act on the recommendations, keep records, and display the right signage.

Have an older door? The 2023 standard doesn't apply to doors made before it was published. We assess your door against current standards and tell you clearly what needs doing and what's recommended.

What We Check

What a door service covers

A door service is a structured set of tests, not a quick look. Here's what we test on every door.

Safety Sensors

We test that the door detects people in its opening and closing paths, at the threshold and side screens on sliding doors, and in the opening and closing directions on swing doors. We also check how the door is activated, whether that's radar, push pads, access control or a fire alarm.

Door Forces & Timings

BS EN 16005 sets limits on impact and crushing forces and says they must be checked by measurement. We measure the door's closing force with force-testing equipment and check the opening width and the opening, hold-open and closing times.

Gaps & Guards

We check the finger and crush points at the leaf edges, pivots, frames and return walls, and the guards and barrier rails that protect them.

Escape & Power Failure

Doors on escape routes have extra safety requirements. Depending on the type, a door must break out in the direction of escape, open automatically when the power fails, or open easily by hand. We test whichever applies to your door.

Signage

Signs tell people what the door is going to do. We check for automatic door, keep clear, accessibility and push-button signs. A door with a break-out function must carry a break-out sign.

Written Record

Every automatic door should have a maintenance log covering each service, repair and recommendation. After every service we give you a written record to keep with the building.

Repairs & Maintenance

Automatic door maintenance that keeps your door working

According to the ADIA, regular maintenance keeps an automatic door reliable, with less downtime. It also helps the door save energy and stay accessible, gives a professional first impression, and keeps repair costs down over time, with fewer emergency repairs and a longer life for the door.

BS EN 16005 says owners can be given simple checks to do themselves, and that all other maintenance is for professionals. We can book your door in for a service at least once a year, as recommended in BS EN 16005 and the ADIA checklist.

When Something Needs Fixing

Clear findings, your choice

If a service finds something that needs attention, we explain it in plain English and quote for the fix. You choose what work goes ahead. We tell you whether the door is working safely, needs repairs to reduce the risk of injury, or should be left in a safe position until it's put right.

We service and repair automatic pedestrian doors, and we also fit replacement doors, new door frames and complete new installations.

We work on all types of automatic door, including sliding, swing and revolving doors, and on makes including GEZE, FAAC and Record, plus many others.

Who It's For

Doors that work for everyone

Schools, care homes, supermarkets and surgeries use automatic doors every day. The ADIA says a well-maintained door improves access for wheelchair users, people with limited mobility, parents with pushchairs and anyone carrying something.

Care Homes

Residents, visitors and staff rely on the front door all day. We check the sensors, door forces and escape functions on every visit.

Schools

Entrances used by pupils, parents and staff at busy times, often on escape routes. We also look after school gates, so one contractor can cover the site entrance.

Shops & Supermarkets

Your automatic door is the first thing customers meet, and the one thing you don't want out of action. We'll agree a visit time with you in advance. Our visits and work take place during normal working hours, as we don't offer an out-of-hours service.

GP & Dental Surgeries

Patients arrive with walking aids, wheelchairs and pushchairs. Regular servicing keeps the door reliable and easy to use, with a written record for your files.

Facilities & Property Managers

Landlords and managing agents have a duty to visitors and the public. We give you a written record for every door, for your compliance files, and also look after gates and barriers, access control and intercoms and CCTV.

FAQs

Automatic door questions

Answers to common questions about automatic door servicing, safety checks and BS EN 16005.

BS EN 16005 recommends that a door's safety functions and safety devices are checked at least once a year, and the ADIA risk assessment checklist calls for automatic doors to be serviced at least annually. Your own staff can carry out simple day-to-day checks, but all other maintenance is a job for a professional.

The once-a-year frequency is a recommendation in BS EN 16005 and the ADIA checklist, not a figure set in law. The law does set duties: HSE names regulations 5 and 18 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which cover maintaining workplace equipment and the safety of doors and gates, as relevant to powered doors. Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 adds a duty to visitors and the public. Regular servicing is the practical way to meet those duties.

If you own or manage a building with automatic doors, you are responsible for making sure they are safe. HSE says the duty towards visitors and the public also applies to landlords and managing agents. The ADIA advises duty holders to book regular servicing, request a safety inspection and risk assessment, act on the recommendations, keep records and display the right signage.

We test the safety sensors, measure the door forces with force-testing equipment, check the gaps and guards at finger and crush points, test the escape, break-out and power-failure functions, and check the signage. We then give you a written record of what we found and what we recommend.

Not automatically. The current standard, BS EN 16005:2023, says it does not apply to doorsets made before it was published. We assess your door against current standards and tell you clearly what needs doing and what is only recommended, so you can decide what to do and when.

Yes. Vehicle gates and barriers are not covered by BS EN 16005. They fall under a separate standard, BS EN 12453, and we service them as a separate service line. We also install and maintain access control, intercoms and CCTV, so one local contractor can look after your whole entrance.
