The biggest difference with a Southend gate is the air. Salt carried in from the Thames Estuary attacks bare steel, cheap fixings and unprotected motor housings much faster than it does inland, especially on properties along the seafront in Westcliff, Thorpe Bay and Shoeburyness. Southend’s housing changes a lot from one end of the seafront to the other. Leigh-on-Sea has steep roads running down towards the Old Town and plenty of narrow Edwardian frontages, where a sliding gate or a gate motor designed for slopes is often the answer. Thorpe Bay and parts of Eastwood have larger detached houses with wide driveways, where a pair of bespoke aluminium swing gates makes a statement.

Will an electric gate rust near the sea?

It depends on what it is made of. Bare or poorly finished steel corrodes quickly in salty air. We recommend powder-coated aluminium, which does not rust, or galvanised and powder-coated steel, together with stainless fixings. A yearly service with a clean and inspection also helps the motor and moving parts last.

Can you automate a gate on a sloping drive in Leigh?

Usually. A gate that swings against a rising drive will catch, so on slopes we either fit a sliding gate, set the swing gates to open outwards where that is allowed, or use rising hinges. We measure the gradient on the survey before recommending anything.

Can you repair a gate that another company installed?

Yes. We repair all brands of electric gate, including older installations where corrosion has seized the motor or hinges. We will tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense.
