SADP can’t find my device

Why the Hikvision SADP tool shows an empty list, and the simple checks that get your cameras and recorder showing.

SADP tool

SADP can’t find your device?

SADP is Hikvision’s free tool for finding, activating and changing the network settings of cameras and recorders on your local network. If it opens with an empty list, the problem is almost always the network between your PC and the device, not the device itself.

Work through the checks below. Most people are sorted by step two or three.

Our Hik-Connect offline video, which uses the SADP tool to find the device and check its network settings.

Step by step

Get SADP to see your device

SADP only searches your local network, so your PC and the device must be connected to the same router or switch.

01

Use a wired connection on the same network

SADP will not find devices over the internet, through a VPN or across a guest Wi-Fi network. Connect your PC by cable to the same router or switch as the camera or recorder. If you must use Wi-Fi, make sure it is the main network, not a guest network or a separate mesh network.

02

Allow SADP through the firewall

Run SADP as administrator. When Windows asks, allow it on private networks. Make sure your network is set to Private, not Public. Security software and VPN apps can also block it, so pause them while you search. If your PC has more than one network adapter active (Wi-Fi and cable, or a VPN adapter), disconnect the ones you are not using and refresh.

03

Cameras on the recorder’s PoE ports will not show

This catches most people out. Cameras plugged into the PoE ports on the back of an NVR are on the recorder’s own internal network, not your home network, so SADP on your PC will not see them. That is normal. Manage them from the recorder’s camera management screen instead.

If you need to reach a camera directly, unplug it from the recorder and connect it to a PoE switch on your main network, or use the recorder’s Virtual Host option to open the camera’s own settings through the recorder.

04

Check power and cables

Check the device is powered and the network port lights are flashing. Try a different cable and a different router port. Make sure the recorder is connected using its LAN port, not a camera port.

05

Connect directly if all else fails

Plug the device straight into your PC’s network port. SADP should list it even if its IP address is in a different range from your network. You can then tick it and change the IP address, subnet mask and gateway to suit your router. Changing settings needs the device’s admin password. If the fields are greyed out, tick the device first and check DHCP is turned off.

FAQs

Common questions

Quick answers to the questions we are asked most often about this.

SADP is available for Windows and Mac. We find the Windows version easiest to use.

Inactive means the camera has not had a password set yet, for example after a factory reset. Tick it, choose a strong password and activate it. If it plugs into your NVR, the recorder can activate it for you.

No. SADP only searches the local network you are connected to. For remote access use the Hik-Connect app.
