We take gate safety seriously. Many of the issues we see at schools stem from poor original design — manual gates that have had motors fitted after the fact. Safety devices like photocells and edges are important, but most risk can be removed at the engineering stage by building a gate specifically designed for automated operation.

Our gates use non-contact laser detection instead of traditional safety edges. This eliminates the physical contact sensors that are regularly damaged by children and school traffic, dramatically reducing maintenance costs and false alarms while improving actual safety performance.

All installations comply with BS EN 12453, the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, and the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.

Do school gates need to meet Ofsted requirements?

Yes. Ofsted safeguarding guidelines require schools to control access to their site. Electric gates with integrated access control help meet these requirements by restricting entry to authorised personnel, logging access events and providing a physical barrier during school hours.

What safety standards apply to school gates?

School gates must comply with BS EN 12453 (safety in use of power-operated gates), the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. Our installations exceed these standards, incorporating non-contact laser detection, emergency stop buttons and anti-climb features.
