The job
The customer has a pair of traditional metal swing gates, black with gold finials, across a gravel drive. The job was to replace the old gate motors and make the gates easy to use from a phone.
In April 2026 we took the old motors off and fitted a pair of Roger Technology BE20/400 rams, one on each gate leaf. These are above-ground, low-voltage brushless rams that fix to brackets on the post and the gate. They are driven by a Roger EDGE1 control board in a weatherproof box beside the gates. We added a Remootio 3 inside the same box for smartphone control.
Coby's first install
Coby is one of our apprentices, and these were his first gates. Under supervision, he:
- worked out all the motor geometry from Roger's diagrams. That means getting the bracket positions right on the post and the gate, so each ram moves the leaf through its full swing
- measured it all up
- tapped and threaded the posts
- welded the brackets
- installed the motors and the electrics.

We're a family-run firm, and that's why apprentices matter to us. The trade is learned on real jobs, with someone experienced beside you who checks every step. Coby works under supervision, and each new task builds on the last. Training our own people is how we keep the standard of work where we want it, and how we'll still be looking after our customers' gates in years to come.

The kit
Roger Technology BE20/400 rams. Roger Technology is an Italian maker of gate and door automation. Roger lists the BE20/400 as a low-voltage brushless ram for swing gate leaves up to 4 m, with a built-in encoder and mechanical stops for opening and closing. The rams are irreversible, so they hold the gates shut when they're not moving.

Roger EDGE1 control board. The EDGE1 is Roger's control unit for two brushless motors, and it's the board Roger recommends for the BE20/400. It runs both gate leaves and sits in a weatherproof box with a Roger 200VA transformer.
Remootio 3 app control. Remootio is a small smart controller that fits inside the gate's control box. The Remootio 3 lets the household open and close the gates from their phone. It connects by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or the internet, and keys can be shared with family and visitors from the app. Read more on our Remootio page.

Once everything was wired, the system was set up and tested on site, with the safety settings checked.
