How Remootio security works

Thinking about opening your gate from your phone but worried about security? It’s one of the first things our customers ask, so as a family-run gate automation team we’ve set out how Remootio 3 connects, encrypts your commands and keeps you in control of who can open your gate.

Security explained

Encryption, connections and access control

Everything below is based on Remootio’s own published documentation. New to Remootio? Start with our Remootio overview.

What is Remootio?

Remootio is a smart controller that connects to your existing electric gate or garage door opener, so you can open, close and monitor it from a smartphone app. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are built in, so no external bridge or hub is needed. It is wired alongside your existing push button or receiver, so your current remotes keep working. Check your motor with our Remootio compatibility checker.

Three ways to connect: Bluetooth, home Wi-Fi or internet

In the app you choose how your phone talks to the device:

  • Bluetooth: only the Bluetooth module is used and no data goes through your Wi-Fi network. Handy when there is no Wi-Fi at the gate or your internet is down.
  • Home Wi-Fi: only Wi-Fi is used, without Bluetooth. No data goes through the internet; it all stays on your home network.
  • Internet: control and monitor your gate from anywhere. The connection uses an industry-standard SSL connection with Remootio’s end-to-end encryption on top. Most people use the one-click setup; experienced users can set up a peer-to-peer connection instead.

How Remootio protects your commands

  • 256-bit authenticated end-to-end encryption between your smartphone and the Remootio device, whether you use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or the internet.
  • Keys stay with you. Keys are generated during setup and stored only on your smartphone and the Remootio device. Remootio is not cloud-based, so your security does not depend on a third-party cloud provider.
  • A protected setup. The key exchange uses Ephemeral Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman with certificate validation and a digital signature scheme, designed to resist eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle attacks.
  • Replay protection. For every request the device sends your phone a unique challenge it can only solve with the agreed key. Because it is always different, the signals for two opening cycles are never the same, so a recorded signal cannot be replayed to open your gate.

Remootio compared with conventional remotes

Many gates are opened with handheld remotes that use rolling codes. Remootio doesn’t have to replace them; it works alongside them. The difference is mainly about control. Each phone has its own virtual key that you can switch off in the app at any time, you can limit which connection types each key can use, and the Activity Log shows who operated the gate from the app.

Sharing access and revoking guest keys

You can share keys with family, friends, trades or holiday guests by QR code, or by a link sent by text, email or any messaging app. Remootio also offers app-free key sharing by link or QR code for guests and deliveries. There are two types of key:

  • Unique key: for one person. You can enable, disable or delete each one individually, and once a key is deleted that person no longer has access.
  • Guest key: can be shared with any number of people, but they are managed together as one group. Resetting the guest key removes access for everyone in the group, and they don’t regain access when you next share it.

For each key you can choose whether it works over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and/or the internet. For example, you could limit the gardener’s key to Bluetooth only, so it works only at the gate. You can also choose to be notified when a shared-key holder opens or closes your gate.

The activity log

The app’s Activity Log timestamps every event. It shows which shared-key holder operated the gate from the app, records “status changed to open/closed” when the gate is moved by a traditional remote, and lists events triggered by scheduled automations.

Honest limits: what Remootio is not

  • It is not a safety system. Remootio’s manual says it must only be used with gate or door openers that use photoelectric sensors and comply with the relevant safety standards and legal requirements. It controls your motor; it does not replace photocells, safety edges or a properly set up, risk-assessed installation.
  • Keep the gate in sight. The manual says to keep the gate or garage door in sight and clear of people and objects until it is completely closed. Gates set to hold-to-run should not be operated remotely or automatically.
  • Scheduled automations need an internet connection, the status sensor and entrapment protection such as photocells.
  • Bluetooth only works within range of the gate, and internet mode needs a Wi-Fi signal at the gate.
  • Your phone matters too. Keep it locked and the app updated.

Security FAQs

Common questions

No. Remootio states that its keys are generated during setup and stored only on your smartphone and the Remootio device, not in a cloud, so your security does not depend on a third-party cloud provider. In internet mode the connection uses SSL plus Remootio’s own end-to-end encryption.

Yes. In Bluetooth mode no data goes through your Wi-Fi network, and in home Wi-Fi mode no data goes through the internet. Internet mode is only needed to control and monitor the gate from anywhere.

Remootio says no. Each time your phone sends a request, the device replies with a unique challenge that can only be solved with the key agreed at setup, so the signals for two opening cycles are never the same and a recorded signal cannot be replayed.

Delete or disable their unique key in the app and they lose access. If you shared a guest key, resetting it removes access for everyone holding that guest key, and they do not regain access when you share a new one.

Yes. The Activity Log timestamps each event and shows which shared-key holder operated the gate from the app. You can also choose to be notified when a shared-key holder opens or closes your gate.

No. Remootio’s manual says it must only be used with gate or door openers that use photoelectric sensors and that comply with the relevant safety standards. It controls your existing motor; it does not replace photocells, safety edges or a safe installation.
